Ancient City Finder
Find Ancient City coordinates from a seed. Results are ordered by straight-line distance from (0, 0), so you can compare locations before you explore.
How to use this
Enter a seed and this page finds the ancient city closest to spawn in that world. The coordinates are given as surface X and Z values, which give you a target to dig straight down from.
Ancient cities generate deep underground, so once you reach the coordinates shown, you need to dig further down to actually reach it. The area around it is dim and surrounded by deepslate, so bring a light source and move carefully.
If you want to check the wider terrain, open the seed map page to see the biome layout around that location.
About ancient cities
An ancient city is a large underground ruin that generates in the Deep Dark biome. It has a distinctive look built from soul sand and bone blocks, and it is dotted with sculk sensors and sculk shriekers that react to sound and vibration.
If a sculk shrieker is triggered enough times, it summons the Warden, an extremely powerful mob. The Warden does not rely on sight, instead tracking prey by vibration and smell, so sneaking to avoid making noise or footstep sounds is the safest way to move around. Wool blocks muffle vibrations, so placing them underfoot can help you stay undetected.
Chests inside hold items found only in ancient cities, such as echo shards and disc fragments used to craft a unique music disc. It is a location where the reward is significant, but so is the risk.
Because the whole area is built for stealth, running or sprinting is usually the wrong approach. Taking your time and watching for sensors tends to work out better than trying to rush through.
Frequently asked questions
Q. I reached the coordinates but there is no ancient city.
A. Ancient cities generate deep underground, so you need to keep digging straight down from the coordinates shown. There is nothing to see on the surface, so trust the coordinates and keep going down.
Q. Does the same seed give the same location on Bedrock Edition?
A. No. Bedrock Edition generates worlds with a different algorithm than Java Edition, so the same seed produces different terrain and different structure locations. This tool calculates positions for Java Edition only.
Q. What should I do if the Warden notices me?
A. The Warden is extremely strong and fighting it head-on is risky. Common tactics include putting distance between you and it, moving away from sculk sensors, and throwing something to distract it while you retreat.
Q. What is worth bringing before exploring?
A. Wool blocks to muffle your footsteps, a light source for the dark passages, and something to help you escape quickly if things go wrong are all worth packing.
